Following in the footsteps of fellow Canadians Pamela Anderson and Michael J. Fox, comic Jim Carrey officially became an American citizen October 7th and will make the most of his new status to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Carrey, 42, began his pursuit for citizenship in December 2001 based on his love for the country that fulfilled his aspirations of stardom.
'This country has helped define me and make my dreams come true,' he said in a statement.
Despite his newfound nationality, the star of 'Dumb and Dumber,' 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and the upcoming “Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events” maintained pride of his Canadian roots.
'I have no intention of giving up my Canadian heritage, and all those who loved and supported me,' said Carrey. 'My upbringing in Canada made me the person I am. I will always be proud to be a Canadian.'
He began his career with a regular gig at The Comedy Store, where he impressed mentor Rodney Dangerfield so much that the veteran comic signed him as an opening act for an entire season. Dangerfield recently died of complications from heart surgery and Carrey served as a pallbearer for his funeral services.
