More than 35 Dead in Attacks on Egyptian Resorts

At least 35 people are feared dead and over 100 injured in separate attacks on three Egyptian Red Sea resorts popular with Israeli tourists.

A suspected truck bomb ripped through the Taba Hilton around 10 P.M. Thursday. Taba is a resort town close to the Israeli-Egypt border.

10 floors of the 430-room hotel collapsed trapping many in the rubble. Rescuers from the Israeli resort of Eilat across the border reported pulling bodies from the smoldering ruins.

The attack was followed two hours later by two other blasts in the nearby resort towns of Ras Satan, and Nueiba on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

Israeli police reported that most of the dead were Israeli tourists. Egyptian Tourism Minister, Ahmed el-Maghrabi said 120 people had been wounded.

Channel 10 television reported that two Israelis were killed in the blast at Ras Satan. Egyptian television said 43 people, mostly tourists, had been wounded in the explosion at the resorts.

These are the first major attacks in Eqypt since 1997 when terrorists killed 67 western tourists at Luxor.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Israeli security forces indicated that the attacks looked to be the work of al-Qaeda.
