New Line to bring back 'Hairspray'

Looks like John Waters is hot again! New Line Cinema is so proud of their 'Chicago', they won't wait for the resurrection of movie musicals to fade away. And since the Broadway version of the 1988 cult-classic "Hairspray" is doing so well, the studio has commissioned producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to repeat their 'Chicago' feat.

The original Waters movie, which starred Ricki Lake and Debbie Harry, followed a new dance star that is harassed by the one she detroned. It was a somewhat modest success, but like all of Waters' works, generated much underground interest.

In 2002, choreographer Jerry Mitchell and stage director Jack O'Brien brought the story on Broadway, and went on to win 8 Tony awards. New Line co-chairmen Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, both actively implicated in the new version, were not shy of promoting their upcoming project.

"It's been nearly 20 years since we first introduced 'Hairspray' to the world and at that time we never could have imagined it evolving into the franchise it has become today," Shaye and Lynne said. "To take a film like this and adapt it into a hit Broadway production, and then bring that musical version back into movie theaters is a first, and we are excited to have Craig and Neil on board to help make it happen."

Choreographer Mitchell will direct the new 'Hairspray'. No word on Waters' involvement, nor on any casting possibilities yet.
