Russia Soon to Have New Type of Nuclear Weapons

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country will soon have access to a new type of nuclear weapon that is different than that used by any other country. Putin said his country needed to keep its defense systems up to date and to prepare to fight the war on terrorism.

'We are conducting research and are testing the most up-to-date nuclear missile systems, which, I'm sure, will be supplied to the armed forces in the near future,' Putin said. 'International terrorism is one of the major threats for Russia. We understand as soon as we ignore such components of our defense as a nuclear and missile shield, other threats may occur.'

American sources are at least relieved that the new Russian weapons systems won't be aimed at targets in the United States.

Some Russian military analysts, like Alexander Golts, feel that Putin is attempting to show Russian citizens that the country remains strong despite all of its recent financial and international difficulties.

'It's more or less a tradition that the Russian leadership prefers to speak about our nuclear capacity, because after all it's the last attribute of a superpower,' Golts said.

No specific details were given as to the type of weapons Putin was referring to.
