On the set of the new 'Honeymooners'

New York Times reporter David Carr wrote up full account of his day spent on the set of 'The Honeymooners', big screen adaptation of the beloved '50 Black&White sitcom.

The new movie from director John Schultz (Like Mike) hopes to translate the classic show to an urban New York setting by making the two leads African Americans. Scribe Don Rhymer (Big Momma's House) retooled the initial screenplay to fit Cedric The Entertainer into Jackie Gleason's shoes as Ralph, while Art Carney is replaced by Mike Epps as Ed.

'It was intimidating in the sense that he is such a popular, iconic figure' told Cedric of his alter ego. 'Gleason had a very unique sense of timing. He could fast-beat a joke and then slow it down, you know, throw a knuckleball.'

Although some purists have denounced the racial changes, the movie's director is quick to point out the universal theme explored by both the sitcom and the new movie.

'This story, the one we are telling, has nothing to do with race,' explained Schultz. 'If one guy is a volatile bus driver who wants to get rich quick and the other is his happy-go-lucky friend, what does that have to do with race? It is a classic, quintessentially American story.'

The Paramount production co-stars Gabrielle Union and and Trixie Hall as the duo's wives. Eric Stoltz, John Leguizamo and the very funny Jon Polito round up the cast.

Filming should go on for a few more weeks, with release scheduled by the end of the summer
