At least one person was stabbed and several people were injured last night when a fight broke out at the taping of the Vibe Awards in Santa Monica, California. Rapper Dr. Dre did not appear to be injured after having been punched in the head by an unidentified man.
The incident occurred as rapper Snoop Dogg and producer Quincy Jones were onstage, preparing to give a Vibe Legend Award to Dr. Dre for his lifetime achievement in hip-hop. Witness report that, as Dr. Dre was preparing to go up to the stage to claim his award, a man approached him, and, at least initially, appeared to be friendly. Then, as Dre’s wife stood by watching, the man began punching Dre in the head.
Dre’s bodyguards and members of G-Unit’s entourage went after the man. Witnesses report that a melee ensued, with chairs being thrown and people chasing one another around the hangar where the show was being taped. It is at this point that one person is believed to have been stabbed.
The taping continued after a ten-minute delay. Dre picked up his award, saying that he wasn’t going to let incidents like this slow him down. The crowd, which was estimated to have been close to 1000 people, then watched a performance by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams. Jadakiss, Anthony Hamilton, and Common also performed.
It is doubtful that any of this will be seen on the broadcast of the show, which is scheduled to air tonight at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on UPN.
