Bill Clinton On the Road Again

Former President Bill Clinton is back on the road after having been sidelined for nearly two months while recovering from heart bypass surgery. Clinton, whose first appearances post-surgery were at rallies for Democratic Presidential candidate, John Kerry, is scheduled to speak tonight at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.

In a speech last night at Columbia University, Clinton told an audience that, in order to win in 2008, the Democrats will have to “articulate a clear and persuasive message to the American people.” He continued by saying that the party has to come up with “good ideas that people can understand and relate to.” He believed that the Democratic Party needs to rework its image, and somehow learn to appeal to small-town America.

'If we let people believe that our party doesn't believe in faith and family, doesn't believe in work and freedom, that's our fault,' he said. This, despite the fact that John Kerry is a faithful Catholic who does not personally believe in abortion or gay marriage.

Clinton is not discussing whether or not his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, is considering a run for the White House in 2008. Although she is a favorite among Democrats, she must first be reelected to the Senate in 2006. This may not be a “given,” in that former New York mayor, Rudy Giuliano and New York’s governor, George Pataki, are both rumored to be thinking about running for her seat.

The possibility of another Clinton candidacy also depends on whether or not John Kerry is able to maintain the trust of his supporters and campaign contributors. Kerry, who has not yet returned to Washington DC from Boston, will return to the Senate where he still has four years left of his term. He has stated that he plans on continuing to challenge President Bush especially in areas of environmental concern. Unlike Al Gore, who virtually disappeared after losing the 2000 election to Bush, Kerry plans on using his position in the Senate to further the Democrat’s agenda.

Will he run again? Senator Kerry's younger brother Cameron thinks it is possible and was quoted as saying that his brother was 'profoundly disappointed' by his defeat.

Republicans are talking Giuliani as a possible Presidential candidate in 2008. There are also those who are talking Bush for 2008 – not George, but, this time, his brother, Florida governor Jeb Bush.
