England's soccer superstar David Beckham will kick off his film career playing himself in the Hollywood produced sports flick 'Goal!'
Variety magazine reports that 'Goal!' will be the first in a $100 million trilogy directed by Danny Cannon (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) about a young man's odyssey to become one of the best footballers the world has ever seen.
Beckham and Real Madrid team-mates Zinedine Zidane and Raul have signed on to play themselves in the sports trilogy.
'It's no secret that I want to be involved in youth coaching when I finally hang up my boots, and I believe that the 'Goal' trilogy will provide a positive message to kids around the world,' Beckham told Variety.
The trilogy stars Diego Luna (Y tu Mamá También) as a kid with a god given talent and a dream. Like a million other kids, he wants to be a professional footballer. But, living in the Barrios of East LA, he is literally a million miles and a lifetime away from ever being able to make that dream a reality. Until one day when something extraordinary happens...
The second of the series will find Luna chasing superstardom, while the third finds the world's newest soccer star at the finale the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Luna has been busy sharpening his already fair football skills by spending eight weeks training with Newcastle team. The first film will be released next August, when the European leagues kick off. The second film is aiming for a release in June 2006, just before World Cup begins -- where the finale will be shot.
The films would mark Beckham's first major part in a feature film.
