Palestinian Leaders See Ailing Arafat

At least one member of a delegation of Palestinian leaders who traveled to Paris to see PA President Yasser Arafat finally got to see the ailing Arafat on Tuesday despite previous objections by Arafat's wife Suha. The visitor was believed to be PA Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia who also planned to meet with French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac on Tuesday.

According to official reports from the Paris military hospital where Arafat is being treated, his condition deteriorated overnight and 'his coma, which led to his admission to the intensive care unit, became deeper this morning.' Some sources close to the scene report that Arafat may only have hours to live.

A delegation of four prominent Palestinians arrived in Paris late Monday and spoke to Arafat's doctors. The visitors included Qureia, former Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath and Parliament Speaker Rauhi Fattouh.

Suha Arafat has limited visits with her husband and before today only one other family member has been allowed in to see Arafat. Mrs. Arafat has been under investigation by French officials for money laundering regarding transfers of over $11.4 million which found there way into her personal accounts. She had not seen her husband in over three years prior to his current illness.

No successor has been named for Arafat and it is unsure what effect his passing or permenant incapacity would have on the Middle East peace process.
