Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke is recovering and in fair condition after undergoing single bypass surgery Wednesday, officials said. The 57-year-old actress is resting comfortably in the intensive care unit at the North Idaho Heart Center.
The heart surgery follows an operation last Spring in which a stent had been inserted in one of her arteries in an effort to improve blood flow.
Duke is probably best known for her familiar role as the identical teenage cousins Patty and Cathy Lane on the popular 1960s TV comedy 'The Patty Duke Show.'
She's also an award-winning actress, earning a best supporting acting Oscar for her inspired portrayal of Helen Keller in 'The Miracle Worker.' Duke took yet another turn at 'The Miracle Worker' winning an Emmy in 1980 for the made-for-TV remake, only this time as Keller's teacher, Annie Sullivan. Other acting Emmys include 'My Sweet Charlie,' in 1970 and 'Captains and the Kings,' in 1976.
Earlier this year, Duke was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has recently appeared in the Broadway musical 'Oklahoma!' as well as in the film 'Bigger Than the Sky,' with her son Sean Astin of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The actress is expected to make a full recovery before the end of the month.
