Soldier Pleads Guilty to Reduced Charges in Abuse Scandel

The third American soldier charged with abusing Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison entered a guilty plea to reduced charges today according to an army spokesman. Spc. Megan Ambuhl,a 30 year-old native of Centreville, Virginia, pled guilty to the charge of dereliction of duty for failing to prevent or report the abuses at Abu Ghraib. As a result of the incident, Ms. Ambuhl has been reduced in rank to a private.

Had the case gone to trial, Ms. Ambuhl faced up to 7 1/2 years in prison. She was charged with watching prisoners being abused and allegedly helping other soldiers set up some of the more infamous pictures that released from Abu Ghraib such as the image of Private Lynndie England holding a naked male prisoner by a leash.

To date, no soldier with a rank higher than Staff Sargent has been accused of any wrong doing despite the fact that evidence indicates that the methods of interrogation used against Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib was approved by higher ups at the Pentagon and at the White House. Four more American soldiers have been charged with crimes related to the mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
