Scott Peterson may not come across as a very likeable man, but that still doesn't mean he killed his wife and unborn child according to Peterson's attorneys who launched their closing argument to the jury this morning in a Redwood City, California courtroom.
According to the defense, the prosecution failed to prove Peterson comitted the crime and failed to even show a motive he might have for killing his wife.
'Clearly, Amber was not the motive,' defense attorney Mark Geragos said, referring to the woman Peterson was admittedly having an affair with shortly before his wife's death. 'Nobody was going to kill Laci Peterson and her child for Amber Frey.'
Yesterday, prosecutors argued that Peterson killed his wife because he didn't want a child and wanted to live the life of a free and single man in addition to his desire to be with his mistress.
Laci Peterson was eight months pregnant when she killed around Christmas Eve of 2002. Her body and the body of the couple's fetus were found approximately four months later in the San Francisco Bay not far from the place Peterson said he had been fishing alone when the abduction and murder allegedly took place. Peterson later told Frey he had 'lost' his wife.
'The best way to look at (the case) is like a jigsaw puzzle,' the DA said yesterday in his closing argument. 'Each piece that I've talked to you about today fits only in one direction and that is that this man is guilty of murder.'
Peterson could face the death penalty if convicted of first degree murder. The jury also has the option of convicting him of a lesser charge that would indicate that while they believed Peterson was guilty of killing his wife that the crime was not premeditated.
