The battle between R. Kelly and Jay-Z may be just beginning. Attorneys for Kelly intend to file a criminal complaint against the perpetrator of the pepper spray incident that abruptly ended Kelly’s participation in the joint tour. His attorneys are also considering taking action over his being ousted from the tour.
On Friday, Kelly took the stage for the first of three scheduled shows in Madison Square Garden. But, after claiming to have spotted two people in the audience with guns, he left the stage. The audience was searched and, after no weapons were found, Kelly was on his way back to the stage when a member of Jay-Z’s entourage sprayed him in the face with pepper spray.
The show continued without him, and Saturday night, Jay-Z brought special guests Mariah Carey, Method Man, and Busta Rhymes along for the ride. Jay-Z will perform again tonight in the Garden without Kelly. Jay-Z’s website confirms that Kelly has been dropped from the show, indicating that Kelly’s fans can get refunds by returning their tickets to the point of purchase.
The “Unfinished Business” tour, which was scheduled to run through November 28, has now been cancelled. This incident was not the first time Kelly had problems on this tour. In Chicago, he arrived two hours late for a performance and walked off the stage in St. Louis. Stops in Connecticut, Cincinnati and Milwaukee were all cancelled.
Kelly and Jay-Z have long been at odds, but teamed up to promote their recently released joint album, Unfinished Business. Jay-Z, who will turn 35 December 4, has stated that this will be his last tour, and that he will be retiring from performing to concentrate on his other business interests. He is the founder of Roc-A-Fella Records and ROC films, and also runs a charitable organization to help young people in the New York area.
