Terrorists struck in Israel again today as a suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded Tel Aviv market, killing three people and injuring at least 30 more. Four of the injuries are believed to be serious. The bomber was also killed.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a terrorist group under the umbrella of Arafat's PLO claimed responsibility for the bombing which was the first since Mr. Arafat was transferred to Paris for medical treatment. The PFLP is based in Syria and its client state Lebanon and combines Arab nationalism with Marxist ideology. In recent years, it has lost influence to radical Islamist groups like Hamas.
The Israeli government asked the Palestinian Authority to crack down on militants. Officially, the PA condemned the attack. Yasser Arafat said from his hospital bed in Paris that he
condemned the bombing as well as 'killing on both sides.' Israeli officials were still searching for the person or persons who drove the bomber to Tel Aviv.
One witness at the scene said, 'I saw a store completely destroyed. Goods fell to the ground. People ran away. I lost my glasses and my hat.' Another witness said, 'I saw lots of people lying on the ground, lots of people wounded.'
The attack came as the Israeli Knesset was debating a planned pullout from the Gaza Strip. No details have been discussed yet with regard to a possible Israeli response.
