Earlier this year, Jeopardy! viewers were spellbound as Ken Jennings broke every previous record on the popular game show. 30-year-old Jennings won 74 games, earning in excess of $2.5 million dollars. As a result he set the record for the highest winnings in game show history.
No question, the show's ratings skyrocketed as casual viewers got caught up in the mania. Now, hoping to capitalize on this phenomenon, Jeopardy! producers have announced a 'Super Tournament' to begin taping early next year.
This tournament will include previous winners of the show including over 100 retired champions - those who were undefeated after five appearances. These competitors will be drawn from all 21 years of the show and are expected to number 150 people. As of now, the plan is to cull the group down to two people who will challenge Jennings in the final round, which is scheduled to air during the May sweeps period.
The stakes are high, with the winner to take home $2 million dollars. The prize for second place is $500,000, and the third place finisher will win $250,000.
Syracuse University professor, Dr. Robert Thompson, thinks that the time is right for Jennings to make a comeback. 'I think no time is too soon for Ken Jennings,' he said. 'He has to strike while the iron is still hot — two years from now he'll just be the answer to a question on 'Jeopardy!'s' TV category.'
