An Israeli drone fired a missile at a car carrying two Hamas terrorists in Southern Gaza near Khan Younis today. The terrorists managed to jump out of the car just before the missile hit. Reports indicate that the terrorists were members of Hamas and were likely on their way to shoot mortars at a Jewish settlement nearby. Some bystanders suffered minor injuries.
According to Israeli army reports, the two men in the car had carried out as many as 40 mortar attacks this week alone. Israel had indicated it would stop targeted assassinations of terrorist leaders during the time leading up to the Palestinian elections but reserved the right to target those who were actively engaging in attacks.
Meanwhile, Mahmud Zahar, a Hamas leader in Gaza indicated that the terrorist group would not stop making attacks against Israel despite requests to do so from Palestinian Authority interim President Mahmoud Abbas.
'(Abbas) must not sell himself to the West to the detriment of the Palestinian people,' Zahar told a reporter. He then urged continued attacks against Israel. 'If the Palestinian leadership had spent as much on arms as they did on taking part in negotiations, that would have been better for the Palestinian people,' he continued.
Hamas does not recognize Israel's right to exist and continues to wage attacks against innocent Israeli civilians both in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and Israel proper. Hamas has decided to boycott the upcoming elections to succeed the late Yasser Arafat on January 9th but did surprisingly well in municipal elections held last week.
