Connecticut Governor Undergos Cancer Surgery

Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell underwent surgery to treat breast cancer today at a Danbury Hospital. The cancer was diagnosed last week after a routine mammogram. As a result, the governor had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She is expected to remain hospitalized for at least three days.

Early tests indicate the cancer was detected early and has not spread. In fact, it was only discovered after a biopsy was done on a non-cancerous calcium deposit.

Rell released a statement which tried to remain upbeat. She said she was looking forward to watching the University of Connecticut play in the Motor City Bowl, the first bowl game in team history. 'My family is here with me for the holidays and the doctors and I are ready,' she said, according to the announcement. 'Nothing is going to keep me from cheering for the Huskies.'

Rell plans to be back on the job within a week and will address the opening session of the State Legislature on January 5th. She took over as governor in November after the resignation of John Rowland on curruption charges.
