An unmanned Russian cargo spaceship brought much needed food to a Russian cosmonaut and an American astronaut living on the international space station orbiting earth. Had the mission not been successful, the two explorers would have had to be rescued due to lack of food and supplies but now they can remain in space for the foreseeable future.
Apparently, Leroy Chiao of the United States and Russian Salizhan Sharipov miscalculated the amount of food, water and supplies they would need on board the space station and were down to one week's worth of supplies when the cargo ship replenished their stock. Most officials blame past crews of the space station for taking the choicest foods and leaving the remaining two astronauts with only staple foods.
The ship also brought Christmas presents from friends and family for the two residents of the space station.
Russian space officials cheered as the cargo ship docked successfully. 'They can greet the New Year calmly,' said Yuri Semyonov, the chief of the company that built the unmanned supply ship.
Another supply ship is scheduled to launch on February 28th.
