A Lot of People Chose to 'Meet the Fockers'

'Meet the Fockers', the sequal to the popular comedy 'Meet the Parents' brought in the most money at the box office this weekend including a new Christmas day record of $19.1 million. The previous Christmas day record was set last year by 'The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King' which took in $14 million.

For the holiday weekend, 'Fockers,' which stars Ben Stiller, Robert Di Niro, Barbara Streisand and Dustin Hoffman, took in a solid $44.7 million despite mixed reviews.

'It's a clash of cultures,' said Marc Shmuger, vice chairman of Universal Pictures. 'It's about the coming together of completely different families, but that's exactly what the world is going through right now.'

'Fockers' also was the first film for actress/singer Barbara Streisand in eight years. It's five day total after a Wednesday opening was $68.5 million.

Second place belonged to 'Fat Albert' the live-action film based on Bill Cosby's animated Saturday morning television show from the 70s. 'Fat Albert' took home $12.7 million, just enough to beat out last week's box office winner, Jim Carrey's 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events' which finished third with receipts of $12.5 million.

The Howard Hughes biopic 'The Aviator' finished in fourth place for the week despite appearing in a limited numer of theaters. The film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese took in $9.4 million. Many critics have called 'The Aviator' one of the year's 10 best films.

The star studded 'Ocean's Twelve' finished in fifth place with $8.6 million followed by 'Darkness,' 'The Polar Express,' 'Spanglish,' 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' and 'Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera' which rounded out the top ten.

Overall receipts were down this weekend which was not a surprise considering that the Christmas holiday fell on a Saturday.

'When Christmas falls on a weekend, it's bad for business,' said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
