President George W. Bush has signed a new law which will give him the authority to freeze the assets of the Sudanese government as a response to the genocide going on the the Darfur region of that country.
Most of the bill contains non-binding guidelines like allowing the president to impose a travel ban and freeze the assets of the Sudanese government in this country. It also urges UN members not to import oil from the Sudan and for the U.S. to assist in the deployment of more troops from the African Union in the region. Ironically, the new law is called the 'Comprehensive Peace in Sudan Act of 2004.'
The civil war in Sudan is being fought between the Arab northern part of the country and the southern non-Arab region. Over two million non-Arabs have been displaced from their homes as a result of the actions of the government and many have been killed. President Bush has described it as a genocide. Repeated ceasefire agreements have fallen through and the violence continues with no end in sight.
