The supreme leader of Iran has accused the United States and Israel of holding unfair elections in Iraq and of creating terrorist attacks throughout the region. Ayatollah Ali Khamenai continued to spew venomous and unfounded conspiracy theories on Iranian state television on Monday.
'The British and Americans want to hold elections on the surface but in reality they want to bring their own agents to power by holding superficial elections,' Kahmenai said.
He also claimed that the U.S. and Israel are behind the recent bombings in Iraq that claimed so many lives. 'I am sure Israeli and American spy services were behind these events. This is a plot which aims at keeping the Iraqis so busy that they will miss the exceptional chance to participate in the January 30 elections.'
The Bush Administration has accused Iran of meddling in Iraqi affairs. The majority of Iraqis are Shi'ite Muslims, as are most Iranians. The U.S. has claimed that Iran has sent money, agents and material to insurgents in Iraq and international terrorists.
Other analysts believe that Iran is raising these kinds of issues to deflect attention away from Tehran's nuclear program. The more the U.S. focuses on Iraq, the less able they will be to deal with potential issues with Iran.
