Carrey Carries 'Lemony Snicket' to Box Office Win

Jim Carrey continues to find success at the box office. The comedian with the rubbery face and energetic personality continued to prove he could sell tickets as his new film, 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events' took home the top spot at the box office this weekend. 'Snickets' opened with an estimated $30.2 million in ticket sales since opening in theaters on Friday.

Carrey plays Count Olaf in the film which is based on a series of books by author Daniel Handler. Olaf is a spooky man who comes to care for three young orphans. Despite the heavy makeup and scary settings, critics still said that Carrey's personality comes through and the movie received mostly favorable reviews.

Second place this week belonged to last week's top selling film, 'Ocean's Twelve' which sold $18.3 million this past weekend. It has now taken in $68.7 million since its opening ten days ago. The film's star power is considerable and it is a sequal based on a successful film that appealed to a mass audience. 'Ocean's Eleven' had taken in $72.3 million in its opening 10 days so the sequal is not far off the pace set by its predecessor.

Adam Sandler's new film, 'Spanglish' opened in third place with a disappointing box office take of $9.0 million. Most experts had hoped for twice that amount. The film was handicapped by mixed reviews and the opening of many strong Oscar contending movies in New York and Los Angeles.

'The Polar Express' continued to move steadily ahead, taking fourth place with $8.6 million. Despite slow initial numbers, the film has now grossed $123.6 million and continues to do well as the holidays approach. 'Blade: Trinity' starring Wesley Snipes rounded out the top five with $6.6 million.

The top ten was rounded out by 'National Treasure,' 'Christmas with the Kranks,' 'Flight of the Phoenix', 'Closer' and 'The Incredibles.'
