Attorneys for pop star Michael Jackson have asked for a delay to his child molestation charges. The trial is scheduled to begin January 31st. In a motion filed in court, Jackson's lawyers asked that the case be dismissed due to what they called 'vindictive prosecution and outrageous government conduct.'
The motion also requests that all evidence seized during the recent searches of Jackson's Neverland Ranch be suppressed. According to a report published by CNN, telephone and security records were reviewed as part of the search warrent issued. Authorities also took a DNA sample from Jackson.
Jackson's attorneys are also requesting that the charges against 'The King of Pop' be dismissed because blacks and Latinos were 'systematically excluded' from the grand jury pool.
'Jackson was entitled to a grand jury drawn from a fair cross-section of the community,' attorney Robert Sanger wrote in his complaint. 'The absence of a fair cross-section also provides grounds for a defendant to challenge the jury's selection process.'
Prosecutors denied such allegations were true.
It appears at this time that Jackson's attorneys are doing all they can to stall the trial and provide Jackson with grounds for an appeal should he be convicted.
The motion will be debated and heard on December 20th. The hearing on the motion could last several days.
