A controversial nativity scene at Madame Tussauds War Museum in London that depicted British soccer star David Beckham and his wife Victoria as the parents of Jesus were knocked over and damaged yesterday. The vandal was not identified.
The exhibit has been closed to the public pending further investigation.
The depiction of Beckham and his wife as the parents of Jesus drew criticism from many religious leaders in England and throughout the world. Other celebrities were also depicted in the scene including President Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prince Phillip as the three wise men and actors Hugh Grant and Samuel L. Jackson depicted as shepards. British pop star Kylie Minogue is shown as an angel as well.
Both the Vatican and the Archbishop of Canterbury spoke out against the controversial piece. The Archbishop said it simply 'went too far' while a spokesman for the Vatican said having celebrities depicting Jesus, Mary or Joseph was 'unacceptable.'
Still the exhibit was extremely popular and the museum hopes to have it back up as soon as possible. Diane Moon, a spokeswoman for Madame Tussauds said, 'We are assessing the damage now, we don't know if it's going to be repairable in a day or if it will take longer,' she said. 'The vast majority of people have taken it in the spirit in which it is intended -- a bit of festive fun,' she said.
