Rock Show Ends in Tragedy

The Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio was the scene of a shooting spree last night, and when it was over, five people were dead and two were injured. Killed in the shooting was heavy metal guitarist, 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott of the rock band Damageplan. He was 38.

The band had just begun their first set when a man opened fired, aiming first at Abbott. Witnesses say that he appeared to be targeting Abbott and shot him numerous times at point-blank range. According to one witness, the shooter walked up to the stage, climbed up onto it and started yelling at Abbott after which he began shooting.

A bouncer for the club was also shot as he attempted to pull the gunman back from Abbott. After shooting at other members of the band, the shooter then turned on the audience and began firing into the crowd. A police officer, who had arrived shortly after the shooting began, shot and killed the gunman. The unidentified officer had been patrolling the area near the club when he heard the shots and responded.

Abbott and his brother Vinnie Paul Abbott were founding members of the rock group Pantera, a popular 90s 'thrash metal' band. The band received two Grammy nominations, one in 1995 for best metal performance for the song 'I'm Broken' and another in 2001 for 'Revolution Is My Name.' The band's video 'The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits,' was named to a list of the top 10 music videos of the year in sales.
