Martha Stewart a True Survivor?

Martha Stewart may be locked up until March, but it seems that this hasn't halted her career one bit. In fact, come September, she will be back on TV with a new homemaking show. The show, which is still untitled, will have a live audience and feature appearance by celebrities. And, it will be produced by Survivor and Apprentice guru, Mark Burnett.

Stewart is currently serving a five-month sentence in Alderson, West Virginia, and as part of the terms of her sentence, is not allowed to conduct business. The deal was cut between NBC Universal and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, the company that Stewart owns. Once she is released from prison in March, she will be required to wear an identifying device, but will be allowed to work up to 48 hours a week.

Burnett feels that many people feel that Stewart got a raw deal, and that Americans are forgiving enough to make this enterprise a success. NBC affiliates in 14 major cities have already signed on to air the show and negotiations are underway in several others.

Stewart was jailed after having been convicted in March of lying to investigators about the sale of her ImClone stock. Although the case is under appeal, Stewart voluntarily entered prison in October in order to put this situation behind her.

Burnett, who met with Stewart prior to her imprisonment, has visited her in West Virginia, but states that they did not discuss business. He plans to return next week for another visit.

Stewart's previous show, Martha Stewart Living, lasted eleven seasons before being shelved last summer. Audiences had dwindled, and some predicted that this would be the end of the road for her. But support for the 'domestic diva' has been strong, and Burnett is betting that audiences will be interested in watching her to see how her experiences are reflected. Burnett has had great success with reality shows and isn't likely to back a loser.

Case in point, shares of Martha Stewart Living rose $1.55 yesterday, closing at $24.43.
