Many Abstinence Only Sex Ed Programs Promote Ignorance and Fear

Federally funded sex education programs that preach abstinence have been misleading and scaring children according to a congressional study. Yes, your tax dollars are going towards programs that say that 50 percent of all American teenage gay men are HIV positive or that touching somebody's genitals can get you pregnant. Another program says that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide. 13 different abstinence programs were studied which the Bush Administration is paying $170 million for in 2005.

The study found that 11 of the 13 programs contained information that was totally untrue and made subjective conclusions based upon the false statements according to a report published in the Washington Post.

Other outlandish and false claims presented to children include, 'condoms fail in 31 precent of all cases during heterosexual sex and that a fetus is a thinking person by the time it is 43 days old.

California's democratic Congressman Henry Waxman, who ordered the investigation, added, 'It is absolutely vital that the health education provided to America's youth be scientifically and medically accurate. The abstinence-only programs reviewed in this report fail to meet this standard.'

Waxman's study also found that the government does not review the content of all teaching materials used in these programs.

Alma Goldman, the deputy assistant health and human services secretary for population affairs stood by the Administration's programs saying, 'One thing is very clear for our children: abstaining from sex is the most effective means of preventing the sexual transmission of HIV, STDs, and preventing pregnancy.'

Waxman does not deny the effectiveness of abstinence as a method of birth control, but argued, 'Something is seriously wrong when federal tax dollars are being used to mislead kids about basic health facts.'
