Scott Peterson's attorney pled for his client's life as the defense opened its case in the sentencing phase of the trial. Pat Harris, one of Peterson's lawyers, said that the jury should consider all of the 32 year old's life before passing sentence and they should realized that his is a 'life worth saving.'
You don't know who Scott Peterson is, and it's going to be our job to show you,' Harris said. 'What we're going to now show you is the 30 years that preceded this,' Harris said. 'And when we show you those 30 years, I believe that you will agree that this is a life worth saving.'
Yesterday, Laci Peterson's mother, Sharon Rocha, gave very emotional testimony that had several members of the jury in tears.
'She wanted to be a mother. That was taken away from her,' Rocha said to Peterson. She later added, 'Divorce was always an option — not murder.'
Rocha also described the difficulty of spending Mother's Day without her daughter. 'The first Mother's Day (after her death) I laid on the floor and I cried most of the day because she should have been there,' she said, crying. Rocha went on to say her life would 'never be the same.'
Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci, and the couple's fetus. Laci was eight months pregnant at the time of her disappearance in late December 2002. Her decapitated body and the remains of the fetus were found four months later floating in the San Francisco Bay. The jury will make a recommendation in to the judge who will make the final decision as to whether Peterson will face life in prison without parole or be sentenced to death.
