Comedian Rodney Dangerfield checked into the hospital for heart valve replacement surgery. Dangerfield maintained his sense of humor as he checked in, telling reporters, “If things go right, I'll be there about a week, and if things don't go right, I'll be there about an hour and a half.” The operation was scheduled for Wednesday. Last year, the New York born comedian underwent brain surgery to reduce the chances of suffering a stroke during the heart operation.
Dangerfield, 82, is best known for his signature line “I don’t get no respect” and has been a regular on the comedy circuit for over 40 years. His best known film work includes 1980’s “Caddyshack” and “Back to School” which was released in 1986.
Dangerfield admitted in his autobiography, “It's Not Easy Being Me: A Lifetime of No Respect but Plenty of Sex and Drugs,” that he has dealt with clinical depression all of his life and that he smokes medicinal marijuana on a daily basis under California law to combat that condition.
Dangerfield intends to continue working after the operation. A television movie based on his autobiography is reportedly in the works for next year and he is scheduled to guest star on television shows including “Still Standing” and “The Family Guy.”
