Al Dvorin, who coined the phrase 'Elvis has left the building' was killed in a car crash Sunday morning on the way home from an Elvis convention in California. Elvis photographer Ed Bonja, who was injured in the crash, was driving the car when it missed a curve on a remote desert highway. Dvorin was thrown from the car and died from his injuries. Dvorin, 81, first met Presley in 1955. His catchphrase stemmed from a 1970s concert when he was asked to let fans know that Presley would not be returning for an encore. He said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and goodnight.' The phrase became instantly famous. Unfortunately, Dvorin was never paid for his words and became bitter toward the Elvis empire. For many years, he avoided conventions because he did not want to be seen as cashing in on Presley’s death.
