The U.S. softball team completed one of the most dominant runs in Olympic history Monday, defeating the Australian team 5-1, and holding a perfect Olympic run of 9 wins, 0 losses, and bashing opponents with an overall scoring margin to 51-1.
Third baseman Crystl Bustos belted two home-runs and drove in three more runs, giving her a record five HRs in the Olympic tournament. Bustos hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and then rocked the house with a 300-foot solo shot far beyond the left-field fence in the third.
Australia's ace pitcher Tanya Harding (4-0) hadn't allowed a run in 33 straight innings, but crumpled to the U.S. women's bats, giving up all 5 U.S. runs in just 3 innings.
The U.S. team had sealed an undefeated Olympic run with it's gold medal win, and almost cleared a perfect shut-out as well, but the Aussie's were able to squeak out one solitary run in the 7th inning -- the only run scored on the U.S. team in over 54 innings.
