Cockiness Loses Again!

Well it happened again. A tribe or group got a little too cocky, and got knocked down a notch.

Last season it was the young, hip crowd that thought they would walk all over the old, weird tribe. Before that it was the infamous coconut incident that brought down a dominant alliance. Doesn't anyone learn? Get a little too full of yourself and the Survivor axe will fall.

It was almost too obvious from the beginning. The startled looks on the men's faces as they realized they were going to be split into tribes by sex. The immediate bragging that the men would dominate. The rush to get away from the boat while the women struggled with untying the boat. The easy building of shelter and the quick start of the fire. While the women gabbed, were disorganized, had trouble starting a fire, couldn't chop a tree down. You just knew that the women were going to win the first immunity challenge.

And then the challenge itself - one of the better ones in a while. And the desperation of the women trying to solve the simple puzzle while the men were waiting for two of their tribe to make it across a simple beam walk. How could Burnett have misled us - how could he so faithfully try to make us think the women were losers, making us think they would win, just to have them lose? Then miracles of miracles, the men flub it on the beam and the second puzzle, and we get a great shot of Heidi riding the rope to retrieve the final key and assure victory. All hail to Mark Burnett - he hasn't changed!

Burnett's editing has made me choose a few favorites. Not winners, but favorites. Daniel, only because he is from Houston (but will probably leave soon). Christy because she is doing it and seems so real and vulnerable. And Rob because he is funny. And of course all the eye candy isn't bad either.

The lines have been drawn in the men's tribe. Two alliances have been built, with a loner who's vote may be crucial to either. The jockeying for position begins in a testosterone laced environment. Another season of Survivor has begun, and it looks like it may be one of the best.
