After the controversial cancellation of The Mole in October of 2001, another even deeper controversy was as of yet looming on the horizon of the Reality television realm.
Following ABC's announcement last October that they would cancel the reality show Mole II, The Next Betrayal, after only airing 3 episodes, some markets allegedly ran one final episode outside of the normal Friday night timeslot, before pulling the plug for good.
This now infamous "Episode 4" has become the center of an even bigger controversy between the people who claim to have seen it, and the people who claim it never aired at all.
Then what really happened on Episode 4? Apparently no one who says they have seen the show can remember any precise details, but they all agree on two things. That 1. the episode ran outside it's normal Friday night timeslot, and 2. The Execution.
In the world of online message boards and chat rooms, it is quite rare to get more than 2 people to agree on any one thing at any one time, but all the individuals I have spoken with who claim to have seen this episode do agree that this one person was eliminated. Patrick Gulfoil.
I must confess, I believe I have seen this episode myself, As I too have vivid recollections of Patrick being eliminated. But if this is the case, why is there little if any mention of this episode anywhere on the internet.
If the episode did indeed air, ABC.com never updated their official Mole II website to reflect this latest eviction. Further, none the sites that normally post summaries of each episode have anything posted on this one elusive show.
The actual airing of this particular episode only dampened the controversy, but did not kill it altogether. Those who still firmly believe that the episode never aired anywhere are calling it a "Lucky Guess", while those who are still resolute in their distant memories of this episode have simply let the argument lie.
So now we can look forward to next week. Pay the bills early and run by McD's, curl up with a good TV set and ask yourself this one question....
