It’s hard to believe sometimes, but I do remember there was life before Reality Based TV shows, a Wal-Mart on every other corner, before cable TV. I remember using a Commodore 64, and life before the internet. I remember playing the Intellivision video games. Pong, remember how cool that was? I remember riding down the road and seeing the nice luxury cars I refer to now as old tanks.
I’ve seen a lot of advances in technology, yet I’ve always known electricity. I have always known dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, vacuum cleaners, television, air conditioners and heaters.
Three families will travel back in time to the 1800’s and be given 160 acres of land each in Montana. They will have to make their own shelter, grow, hunt and prepare their own food living as the settlers did so very long ago. They will dress, socialize and live in that time of history. The setting will take place during the months of June through December.
The families will be able to receive letters and packages (after a search and seizure of items not true to the time period) by making their way to the local store which is acting as their general post office/telegraph office. Just like old episodes of Little House on the Prairie, families will have some cash, but will need to strengthen their bartering, trade and credit skills.
People I have talked with say things like: life was simpler, crime was low, people had it easy back then compared to now. I think this series will show differently. Will it show differently because times were harder, or because the families are now used to modern technology and without them it is more difficult?
Let us look at the families who will be making this televised journey back in time.
First, let us meet the Brooks family. Rudy Brooks is a 68 years old man from California. Rudy will be accompanied by Nate, a 27 Year old man from Massachusetts. Kristen is Nate’s 28 year old wife.
Next we meet the Glenn family. Mark Glenn is a 45 year old man from Tennessee. Karen is 36 years old. Erin is 12 years old. Logan is 8 years old.
Last, but not least we meet the Clune family. Adrienne is 40 years old and from Tennessee. Gorden is 41 years old and from California. Justin is 11, Aine is 15, Conor is 9 and Tracy is 15. Justin, Aine, Conor and Tracy are all from California.
Each family will grow as individuals and as teams as they struggle to make everyday life successful. We wish them well as they go from day to day without our modern technology.
The families will step back in time for the first episode of The Frontier House on Monday, April 29, 2002 on PBS.
