It’s come to this: The ultimate in reality television programming. For the first time in television history, one man turns his entire life over to the American television viewer. Imagine the television viewing audience of America making every decision for you. Should I find a new roommate? America decides. Should I re-connect with my old high school flame? America decides. Should I join a band or go to work for my father’s business? America decides. Can my life be changed for the better? This is the concept behind FX’s new reality series Todd TV, which premieres on Wednesday, January 21 at 10 PM ET/PT.
Produced by Endemol USA, leaders in reality television (Fear Factor, Big Brother), the series revolves around the life of Southern California resident Todd Santos. The 30-year-old Todd works as a waiter and has no direction in life. For seven consecutive weeks, Todd’s life will be in the hands of the viewing audience—every moment, every decision is voted on by the viewers. They calltext message their vote. They decide. He obeys. It could be a drama, a comedy or a nightmare. Only time will tell.
“We hope to accelerate the evolution of reality TV with this experiment,” said Peter Liguori, President and CEO of FX Networks. “We all joke that at some point TV will just run someone’s life 24/7. That point is now”
The first episode will be a crash course introducing America to Todd. At the end of each episode, viewers will be presented choices on a number of major life decisions to vote on for Todd. He must follow the path chosen by the audience. For the run of the show, Todd will give up both his privacy and his free will.
Todd TV is an adaptation of Endemol’s Dutch reality series Master Plan.
“Todd TV is a ground-breaking concept,” said David Goldberg, President of Endemol USA. “The American public will have a chance to control Todd’s life in never-done-before ways. T-Mobile is a key component to this and we’re delighted to work with them to offer their subscribers additional ways to interact with Todd and change his life.”
Audience participation is the key to determining the fate of Todd. To that end, FX and Endemol USA have signed up T-Mobile to be the series’ official wireless provider in a groundbreaking deal. Viewers across most major wireless carriers will be able to vote by text messaging about major decisions impacting Todd’s life.
However, T-Mobile subscribers will be offered exclusive and encompassing mobile content about Todd, including Todd’s picture mail diary, daily alerts about what’s happening to Todd and instant polls that give T-Mobile subscribers the ability to control Todd in real time down to the smallest detail, including what he might eat for lunch or what movie he sees on any given day. T-Mobile subscribers will also have exclusive access to the show’s theme music as a mobile phone ringtone, along with a selection of entertaining sound bites from Todd. The show logo and images of Todd and his world will be available to T-Mobile subscribers to download on to their mobile phones as screensavers and wallpaper.
