Fox has done it again with a guilty pleasure that at first glance, promised to be a hideously awful reality show, but as the first three episodes have been televised, I have to admit....I'm hooked!
My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance' is a test of how much one will put up with in the ultimate quest for a big buck payoff, with the usual twists and turns...of course. The premiere episode introduced the viewer to the sweet, wasp-y Randi, a lithe blonde 23 year old grammar school teacher from Scottsdale, Arizona, as American as apple pie. She is under the impression that she and her 'finace'' have to convince her relatives and best friend that she met her 'intended' on a reality show, and has fallen madly in love with him, intending to marry her new guy. The caveat for her is that if she gets to the altar with no objections from anyone close to her, and 'marries' her beau..she'll spilt a million dollars with her fiance'. Of course , this is FOX, and that would simply be too easy.
She was led into a room with several handsome and fit men, and chose who she thought her loved ones would accept and believe she would fall for, picking her own hot guy. Then host Claudia DiFolco explained that it wouldn't be that simple. In a hilarious,if not mean entrance worthy of the cheese that My BFOF is, DiFolco tells Randi that she's not that lucky, and ' here's your fiance'' , a spotlight trained on the curtain, the over the top strains of the theme from the movie Psycho blare loudly as the befuddled buffoonish clod Steve appears to the shocked Randi. A tall, 275 pound man mountain, but not as hideous as the show promised, I felt it was a bit mean of FOX to pick on the big guys...but the obnoxious was yet to come.
The big twist of the show is that 'Steve' is actually an actor, who's mission is to be so gross, disgusting and inappropriate that Randi will have to try and pass off this lout as someone she's been waiting for all of her life! Will she succeed? But Steve's 'family', in upcoming episodes are actors as well...and according to Randi, her family is the all american, uptight , no nonsense kind who'll never accept his bad behavior, and she tries to mold this lump of clay into something passable , all to get her hands on the loot, of course. Talk about Fear Factor..I'd rather eat pig eyeballs.
Steve, of course, plays this to the hilt. He's the lovechild of an unspoken tryst between Carla Tortelli and Norm Peterson during one lonely, drunken night at CHEERS.
He has the body and face of Norm, and the bad behavior of Carla. Somewhere, Vera weeps softly. Steve does everything to the excess, slobs around the world bow down to him. He swills wine from the bottle, burps and farts practically on cue, eats like a pig..torments Randi to no end. His notorious 'sexy' dance in his briefs while trying to get Randi to see him naked was one burned in the mind of viewers across the land. However, Steve is a great actor, as he has his moments, like a time when Randi thinks he's actually falling for him, and she does spare his feelings a bit, still exasperated to no end. A visit to a bridal shop and entertaining wedding caterers only embarasses Randi more, as Steve IS the big fat obnoxious fiance', and these people (who are NOT in on the joke as well) are aghast at Randi's choice of her man!
This past weeks episode introduced the viewer to Randi's best friend, who's reaction to the primped up Steve is priceless, as just on face value alone, it's funny to watch her bite her tongue about her friends new man. But the real fun was yet to come as Steve's 'family' met Randi. They made the Bundy's look like high society! His 'mom' worried if she was built for baby bearing...'dad' was obnoxious emeritus, as his specialty was doffing his swim trunks in the hottub , as a mortified Randi looked on in horror, not to mention the Wednesday Addams-like 'sister' who liked to float face down in the tub for some deadman play! All in all, it's entertaining to watch the tourture Randi must bear with every episode.
This week (Feb 9th) promises to be one of the best as Randi's family visits her new man, and she drops the bomb on them. Will they freak? Will Dad and her brothers drown this lout in the hottub? It promises to be a fun 3 weeks ahead, as this 6 week series comes to a conclusion.
There's still plenty of time to catch this great guilty pleasure..My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancee..what would YOU put up with for money?!
